Beat the Blues – Fun Winter Activities At a City Near You !

If our Winter Activities series articles haven’t gotten you out of the house yet, this post will for sure. Cities all over Australia have decided enough is enough and are fighting back the chill. Here are a couple of upcoming events to beat the winter blues:

Sydney

Did someone say food truck? Yes, yes they did.IMG_5027

Word on the street is that 25 of them are going to converge in the Flemington car park for a series of night time food markets open every Saturday from 6.30-10.30pm. The menu will change monthly according to themes

Not into food? Amuse yourself with the retro arcade games or live music on offer!

Melbourne

Any American sitcom (think Gilmore Girls, Friends, HIMYM, all those awesome shows you binge watch during winter) or movie based with scenes during winter has everyone elegantly twirling and skating on ice. Melbourne has rose to the challenge, and there are now two ice rinks! One in Docklands, and the other in Fed Square at Fed Squares River Rink.

Go with your friends, your kids, your special other half for a magical evening of ice skating, then head out for a warm cup of hot chocolate/coffee/mulled wine, whatever your drink of choice is.

If you go out to Docklands, then take a ride on Melbourne Star (there’s a 25% discount with your ice skating ticket) and watch the city lights from the warmth of your pod for 30 minutes.

Winter is the perfect time for a romantic evening, with the perfect excuse to cuddle up to your special someone!

Ice skating not for you? Melbourne has hawker markets down pat these days, winter brings around the pretty cool (pun intended) Vic Market Night Markets every Wednesday night.  This years theme is fire and light, so go check it out. There’s a great variety of food stalls, anything from a pork belly to creme brulees.

Top Tip: These markets are packed! Hit the stall with skewers, 1. they are really really good! 2. Wait is only about 15 mins, because they have come to these markets since the first year, so they have their act together and are very efficient! If you are like me, and you are starving by the time you get to the market, you do not want to be waiting for 30 minutes for food! That is how friendships and relationships are broken 🙂 Once you have food in your tummy, check out all the other amazing stalls!

Adelaide

Ever wondered what a Winter Island Festival is? Well wonder no more. On Sat 14 July from 6pm to midnight you can head down to Producers Bar in the city and find out for yourself. This all ages event will see you dancing the chill of the night away to tunes on a sandy dance floor. Purchase your tickets here.

Not into moshing or dancing? Then maybe try Aqua Beats instead. No age restriction and no entry really does make it a ‘free for all’ (pun intended!). Dance under the stars from 5.30pm – 9.30pm to the beat of the music and the water feature in Victoria Square.

Both of these events are part of the 2017 Umbrella Winter City Sounds, follow the hashtag #UmbrellaADL

So get out there – we guarantee* you’ll have fun. Hashtag us at #tripavengers or tweet back to us on @tripavenger and let us know how you went!
