One of the best foodie getaways in Australia is Margaret River. If you are a food connoisseur, then there is so much to eat here (I mean “see” of course! 🙂 ), from visiting farmers markets with great local produce, specialist food stores, and of course wineries, great restaurants and cafes. These are just a few of the things we saw on our whirlwind trip to Margaret River!
Margaret River Farmers Market
The Margaret River Farmers Market runs every Saturday at the Margaret River Education Campus. We got here just around brunch time, perfect time for some chocolate croissants, or maybe a gourmet sandwich. Pick up some freshly baked sourdough bread, fresh eggs and home made sausages for breakfast the next day. There’s also other great produce like local olive oil, exotic sauces, dips and spreads, great gift for your friends and families.
The Berry Farm
A friend recommended The Berry Farm as a great spot for lunch. This is just one of many cafes around Margaret River that do some really sensational food with a seasonal menu. I know I said I was not going to talk about wineries as it is covered all over the web, but for all you wine lovers, there is wine here, so have a glass with your brunch/lunch/afternoon tea!
We headed over to The Berry Farm for a late lunch. Sitting under a clear sunny sky, at cute picnic tables with friendly wrens coming for a visit, we had a delightful afternoon eating a sandwich, slow cooked lamb rump and a salad. We were of course starving as it was late afternoon, but the food is super yummy. Now we ordered too much, but we made a pretty decent attempt at finishing off all the food.
The Berry Farm also has specialised jams, preserves, sauces, syrups and dressings. We bought some raspberry jam here to take home, and it some pretty tasty raspberry jam.
Providore – Margaret River
The Providore at Margaret River has been voted as one of Australias Top 100 Gourmet Experiences. Now we didn’t know that when we decided to visit this unassuming building, for that matter we didn’t even know what it was, but decided to check it out as we had some time on our hands. The Providore has a it’s own vinyards, olive groves, orchard and vegetable gardens. This is a great place to stop by for a few mins or few hours, taste the produce, and of course stock up on all the delectable goodies. We bought some orange and fennel caramelised onion and various other goodies, next time we visit, we will definitely stock up on more items! Of course in true Margaret Valley style, there is also wine tasting.
Around Margaret River Township
Around the Margaret River Township, there are butchers, ice creameries, specialist delis with fresh pasta etc. If you have self catering accommodation or on a budget, then Margaret River really does give you great options to eat in, with beautiful fresh produce as an alternative to eating out!
