Spring is almost upon us and the gardens are ready to bloom (or, if you’re lucky, already blooming), and with Spring comes Tulip Mania! As I am writing this hubby walks past and tells me “tulip mania is actually a thing you know, it’s an economic bubble”, which is met with my bewildered look. So of course I’ve gone on Wikipedia, and this is what it tells me:
“tulipomania … was a period in the Dutch Golden Age during which contract prices for bulbs of the recently introduced tulip reached extraordinarily high levels and then dramatically collapsed in February 1637. It is generally considered the first recorded speculative bubble (or economic bubble)…”
So that’s an interesting fact to know before visiting the tulip festivals in Melbourne and Canberra!
Tesslaar Tulip Festival (Melbourne)
In Melbourne, we of course have the Tesslaar Tulip Festival. It runs from September 10th to October 10th. The festival is held in Silvan, just under an hour’s drive from Melbourne. There’s 25 acres of tulips, tulip fields as far as the eye can see in every direction. Every week had a different theme, for example Irish Weekend, Jazz and Wine etc. This year the theme for the first week is Wizard of Oz. There are of course all the gourmet food options to look forward to as you would expect at any self respecting Melbourne event! I love coming to the Tesslaar Festival because it’s spring, there are flowers, and nothing says its spring like visiting some sort of garden/flower festival, with music, sunshine and good food, not to mention the ample opportunities to satisfy every type of photographer!
This is a ticketed event, so if you’re visiting on a weekend, definitely buy the tickets online to save the wait in lines. Take your loved ones, friends, kids, and have an awesome time!
Floriade is another tulip festival, but it happens in Canberra (who knew! Canberra has cool stuff too!). It runs from 15th Sept to 15th Oct and is FREE. There is also the twilight festival (which is ticketed) and runs from 22nd Sept to 24th and 29th Sept to 1st Oct.
A couple of years ago, I had a friend living in Canberra, and I had the perfect excuse to go down to Canberra, visit Floriade with her (and quite a few other gardens), and make it a real girls weekend. Floriade has lots of experience type events that you can book into. For example, we booked into an early morning photography class, so that we had exclusive access to the grounds before the crowds arrived. There are also cooking classes, flower arrangements and perfume workshops to just name a few experiences available!
The Floriade Twilight Festival has the grounds lit up with interactive lights and live concerts. It’s a real experience and definitely worth the visit!
So we hope you head out and enjoy some Tulip Mania!
Happy Trip Avenging!
